{"id":2214,"date":"2026-02-09T12:47:47","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T12:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ntd-coalition.org\/?p=2214"},"modified":"2026-02-09T12:47:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T12:47:47","slug":"parliamentary-event-urges-uk-to-restore-global-leadership-on-neglected-tropical-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ntd-coalition.org\/?p=2214","title":{"rendered":"Parliamentary event urges UK to restore global leadership on neglected tropical diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<header aria-label=\"Article header\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"relative reader__grid\">\n<div class=\"reader-author-info__container\">\n<div class=\"mt4\">On 4 February 2026, the UK Coalition Against Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Malaria and NTDs co\u2011hosted an event at the Houses of\u00a0 Parliament titled <em>Leaving No One Behind: Reaching 1 billion people affected by NTDs.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-scaffold-immersive-reader-content=\"\">\n<div class=\"reader-article-content reader-article-content--content-blocks\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"reader-content-blocks-container\">\n<p id=\"ember49\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The event brought together Parliamentarians, global health leaders, researchers, people with lived experience, and civil society, calling on the UK Government to reaffirm and strengthen its leadership on NTDs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember50\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Speakers highlighted that integrating NTD prevention, diagnosis, and care into essential health services\u2014alongside predictable, transparent funding for research and implementation\u2014is vital to ensure that the world\u2019s most marginalised populations are not left behind.<\/p>\n<div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\">\n<figure class=\"reader-image-block__figure\">\n<div class=\"ivm-image-view-model reader-image-block__img-container\">\n<div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper \"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember51\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered reader-image-block__img evi-image lazy-image ember-view\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/v2\/D4E12AQEwYltuAPJw8A\/article-inline_image-shrink_1000_1488\/B4EZwt6MmwIMAU-\/0\/1770296765948?e=1772064000&amp;v=beta&amp;t=2Gk0ldBU_VCKabJoJol8_u6BxotRCLRLvWe5Vqd5F5c\" alt=\"Article content\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"reader-image-block__figure-image-caption display-block full-width text-body-small-open t-sans text-align-center t-black--light\">Above: Dr Lauren Sullivan MP speaking at the event. These 21 preventable and treatable diseases and conditions trap people in cycles of poverty, thriving among some of the most isolated and marginalised communities.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But progress proves what\u2019s possible. Guinea worm cases have fallen from 3.5 million to just 10 last year, and sleeping sickness cases dropped from 40,000 annually to fewer than 600 in 2024. Photo by: Paula Plaza\/Unlimit Health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Guests and speakers included The Rt Hon Baroness Chapman of Darlington, Minister for International Development and Africa, as well as representatives from the <a class=\"jFyrVBZmOJTVoHJvKvUZeDCVoBSSacnHLLmEXDw \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/world-health-organization\/\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO), industry partners, academics, civil society organisations, and advocates across sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, and One Health.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember58\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In a significant announcement, Baroness Chapman confirmed \u00a33 million in new UK funding for operational research on NTDs. The investment will support work on female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), migrant health, and strengthening health systems for NTD service delivery. She added:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u201cWe can do research, we can do programming, we can share best practice, and share our expertise. But this has to be African-owned, African-led, and African delivered. That&#8217;s how you get the sustainable long-term change that really makes a difference.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We&#8217;ll support research work on integration and understanding how NTD interventions can work with and strengthen countries\u2019 health systems. This will also extend to work in FGS. I\u2019m very pleased that we&#8217;re able to support that, which so profoundly affects the lives of so many women.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">We are alongside you, and we want to continue to work incredibly closely with you. We value enormously the innovation, the leadership, and the approach that you take, which I think we can learn so much from in other areas of development.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The event showcased a powerful video with testimonies from people affected by NTDs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember66\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Via video Dr <a id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/daniel-ngamije-madandi-39285128a\/\">Daniel Ngamije Madandi<\/a>, Director of Malaria and NTDs at WHO, stated:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u201cI would like to highlight the UK\u2019s commitment to NTD elimination. He highlighted:<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re really delighted that today we launched this WHO guideline. I encourage you all to see how it can be integrated into all your programmes. The dominant global R&amp;D model relies heavily on market-driven incentives, which rarely work for diseases with limited commercial return. We have the tools, the science, and the partnerships and research talent in countries hit hardest by NTDs.
